Reproductive Services

The gang's all here! The breeding world can be a challenging and stressful world to enter. Our doctors and reproductive technicians at Rose City Veterinary Hospital are here to help you through the entire process.

With a combined 20 years of experience, we will guide you from the initial pre-breeding exam and consultation, to the whelping or c-section of your litter.

Reproductive Evaluation
The Doctor will examine the overall health of the bitch or stud being considered for breeding.  Diagnostic testing may be recommended at that time. This is your opportunity to have all of your questions answered.

Ovulation Timing
Progesterone MicroscopeTest - After the pre-breeding exam, it is recommended that progesterone tests be run to track the hormonal timing of the bitch. Multiple progesterone tests may be necessary to determine the optimal breeding times.

LH Testing - This test for lutenizing hormone can be used in addition to the progesterone test to allow the doctors to identify the LH landmark for more precise timing.

Vaginal Cytology (Smear) - A vaginal cytology is another procedure we use in conjunction with progesterone to ensure proper timing.

Board-for-Breeding
Board-for-Breeding is an opportunity for busy owners to board the bitch from the beginning of her heat cycle until after she is bred. We perform all necessary tests per doctor’s directions, and notify the owner of all results.

Artificial Insemination
Surgical Inseminations
– This procedure is recommended for females 6 years of age and over, and for females who have failed to conceive previously. It may also be beneficial when using frozen semen to inseminate.

Trans-Cervical Inseminations – This is the most commonly used insemination procedure offered at our hospital. It requires no anesthesia, and places semen through the cervix into the uterus using an endoscopic camera.

Vaginal Inseminations – This procedure places semen into the vaginal vault. It is usually recommended when using high quality fresh or chilled semen.

Semen Services
Semen Sperm VisionEvaluation (SpermVision) - We are one of very few hospitals that have the Sperm Vision technology. This technologically advanced system gives a more accurate analysis of semen, analyzing motility, abnormalities and concentration. This process allows owners to better understand the viability of their pet’s semen collection.

Chilled Semen Shipping - This process enables the stud dog owner to ship the sperm anywhere within the United States or Canada, typically overnight.

Semen Freezing and Storage - We have the resources to collect and freeze canine semen, and provide reliable long-term storage.

Frozen Semen Shipping (International and Domestic) - This process enables an owner to send canine semen anywhere in the world, unless international restrictions apply. Call for information prior to semen collection regarding specific country regulations.

X-Ray for PuppiesX-Ray for Puppies - During the last week of pregnancy, x-rays are often used for a more accurate count of puppies. It can be used to determine the safest birth route. X-ray can also be used to determine if there are any more puppies post-whelping.

Whelp-wise - If you are concerned about birthing your puppies, the Doctor will assist you in contacting Whelp-wise, a service that helps you monitor a healthy delivery.

C-Sections – Our staff is highly trained to perform emergency or planned c-sections to ensure healthy puppies and mothers.
